CHAPTER NINETEEN

Mia left the police station feeling utterly drained, like she’d just gone ten rounds with a boxer. Graham Stone motioned everyone together on the sidewalk.

“Time for a crew meeting,” Graham said in a low voice, as if the police might be listening.

Sylvie crossed her arms and looked at him like he was crazy.

“Now? After what Mia’s been through?”

“I’m fine,” Mia said. “I think work will help me feel better.”

“Are you sure?” Ollie said.

Mia nodded. The truth was, she didn’t want to be alone.

“It’s settled then, follow me to the new office.” Graham marched down the street, followed by Ollie, while Sylvie and Mia trailed behind.

The new office? Ordinarily Mia would be excited, but right now her mind was racing. What had Landry seen at The Black Cat Inn to make him so deeply suspicious? Now that her head was clearing, there were things about the scene that bothered her too. Why was Dutch facing the front door? Had he been answering it? Was someone else there before she arrived? What was that black stuff on the ceiling and the canopy?

Mia’s phone pinged. Her mother was calling, no doubt having a DEFCON 1 level freak-out. She showed Sylvie the caller ID and picked up.

“Mom?” she said nervously.

“Mia? Is that you?” Madison said, radiating hysteria down the line. “Was that some kind of a prank? If so, you are in a lot of trouble, young lady!”

“Um, I’m afraid not,” Mia said, wishing she could curl into a ball. If only she had a time machine to start this day over again.

“What is all this about a dead body? The police called me and asked if you were really you. Is that detective going to arrest you? Daniel! Come here! Mia’s being arrested!”

“No, wait, Mom, I am not being arrested! I did find a dead body and the police had some routine questions, that’s all.” But even as the words left her mouth, she wasn’t entirely sure that was true.

“I knew this was a bad idea. First, you’re talking about ghosts and ghouls and now you’re finding dead bodies? Are these people you’re involved with criminals? Daniel and I are driving to Salem, do you hear me? Daniel! Get the car ready!”

“Wait! Mom! Please! Everything’s fine. Listen, can I call you later?”

“You’d better. And I’m calling your sister and Jeffy now.”

Mia hung up. Great, now everyone would know.

“Momzilla?” Sylvie said.

“You could say that,” Mia said.
