CHAPTER NINETEEN
Mia left the police station feeling utterly drained, like sheâd just gone ten rounds with a boxer. Graham Stone motioned everyone together on the sidewalk.
âTime for a crew meeting,â Graham said in a low voice, as if the police might be listening.
Sylvie crossed her arms and looked at him like he was crazy.
âNow? After what Miaâs been through?â
âIâm fine,â Mia said. âI think work will help me feel better.â
âAre you sure?â Ollie said.
Mia nodded. The truth was, she didnât want to be alone.
âItâs settled then, follow me to the new office.â Graham marched down the street, followed by Ollie, while Sylvie and Mia trailed behind.
The new office? Ordinarily Mia would be excited, but right now her mind was racing. What had Landry seen at The Black Cat Inn to make him so deeply suspicious? Now that her head was clearing, there were things about the scene that bothered her too. Why was Dutch facing the front door? Had he been answering it? Was someone else there before she arrived? What was that black stuff on the ceiling and the canopy?
Miaâs phone pinged. Her mother was calling, no doubt having a DEFCON 1 level freak-out. She showed Sylvie the caller ID and picked up.
âMom?â she said nervously.
âMia? Is that you?â Madison said, radiating hysteria down the line. âWas that some kind of a prank? If so, you are in a lot of trouble, young lady!â
âUm, Iâm afraid not,â Mia said, wishing she could curl into a ball. If only she had a time machine to start this day over again.
âWhat is all this about a dead body? The police called me and asked if you were really you. Is that detective going to arrest you? Daniel! Come here! Miaâs being arrested!â
âNo, wait, Mom, I am not being arrested! I did find a dead body and the police had some routine questions, thatâs all.â But even as the words left her mouth, she wasnât entirely sure that was true.
âI knew this was a bad idea. First, youâre talking about ghosts and ghouls and now youâre finding dead bodies? Are these people youâre involved with criminals? Daniel and I are driving to Salem, do you hear me? Daniel! Get the car ready!â
âWait! Mom! Please! Everythingâs fine. Listen, can I call you later?â
âYouâd better. And Iâm calling your sister and Jeffy now.â
Mia hung up. Great, now everyone would know.
âMomzilla?â Sylvie said.
âYou could say that,â Mia said.
